Study Suggests Escitalopram May Reduce Inflammatory, Neurotoxic Biomarkers

In addition to alleviating symptoms of depression in some people, the selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram may protect against some inflammatory and neurotoxic biomarkers associated with the mood disorder, a study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research reports.Angelos Halaris, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and colleagues compared blood samples from 30 adults with MDD taking 20 to 40 mg of escitalopram daily for 12 weeks with those obtained from 27 controls.
